Starry Nights Festival, 2009

YUCCA VALLEY — The Southern California Desert Video Astronomers will highlight the night when The International Year of Astronomy comes to town Saturday, as part of Yucca Valley’s 13th annual Starry Nights Festival.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Center complex in downtown Yucca Valley, starting with an update by Sky’s the Limit on the observatory and nature center in Twentynine Palms.

Noted astronomers David Levy and Dennis Mammana will give slide shows and lively lectures, and award-winning photographer Wally Pacholka will give a presentation of his unique and iconic work.

The Hi-Desert Nature Museum, which co-sponsors the festival with the Town of Yucca Valley, will be hosting a Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids are encouraged to wear space-themed costumes, and there will be plenty of crafts, activities and movies.

A twilight reception with will run from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Yucca Room while the Southern California Desert Video Astronomers set up their high-tech viewing equipment outside. New to Starry Nights this year, the astro-imagers use several large screens on which they project Hubble-quality views of the heavens as captured in their giant telescopes.

There is no price for admission, courtesy of the Morongo Basin’s Andromeda Society and Southern California Edison.
